7. When is the best time of year to visit Grasslands National Park?

Anytime is great! Here is a summary of the highlights!

  • April: Cooler weather is great for hiking. Spring birds have come back and the sharp-tailed grouse are dancing!
  • May: Spring wildflowers are in bloom! Best time of year to look for grassland songbirds. Small groups of bison are often visible from Ecotour.
  • June: Best time of year for wildflowers! Reptiles are starting to make their appearance and songbirds are still singing! This can be the windiest time of year.
  • July: Best time of year to look for Burrowing Owls as their chicks are peeping out of the nests! Best time of year to look for short-horned lizards and prairie snakes. This time of year, you are least likely to see bison as it is the rutting season.
  • August: A lovely time to visit the park as wildlife seem to be extra active as the summer heat starts to cool. This is the best time of the year for astronomy! Most wildflowers are done by now.
  • September: While many birds have started their migration, it is the best time of year to look for some unusual migratory birds passing through. It is also the best time of year to look for bison! There are often sightings of the large herds! Reptiles are still out and about and this is a great time of year to see these rare creatures.
  • October: Deer are starting to herd up for the winter and its amazing to see them in numbers. Cooler weather means hiking without ticks, snakes or wind. It can be lovely!
